Mercer Alliance to End Homelessness
Help Preserve Local Housing Trust Funds for Affordable Homes, Pass Fair Budget

Trust Fund Extension Legislation Introduced

Assemblyman Jerry Green (D-22) has introduced legislation that creates a two year extension for municipalities to commit their housing trust funds. Similar legislation may be introduced shortly in the Senate. Under current law, municipalities have until July 17 or they will forfeit any unspent funds to the state.

If passed, A2950 would prevent Governor Christie from using municipal trust fund dollars to backfill his budget, which cuts critical services while cutting taxes the most for New Jersey's wealthiest residents. Granting municipalities an extension allows provides the opportunity to create the houses and jobs New Jerseyans need, including using those dollars to turn vacant foreclosures into affordable homes.

Call your state legislators and tell them to reject any budget deal that takes opportunities away from New Jersey residents struggling to find a quality home they can afford by cutting taxes for our wealthiest residents. Municipal housing trust funds should be used for their intended purpose, which is the creation of affordable homes in communities across the state.
