Mercer Alliance to End Homelessness

Dear Mercer Advocates,

Please read the following advocacy alert, take action and pass along to your colleagues and friends!

The Princeton Junction Town Center development, one of the best opportunities for creating economic development and new homes affordable to people at a wide range of incomes in West Windsor, is in jeopardy and needs your help.

On July 7, the developer of the Town Center, InterCap Holdings, the Township of West Windsor, and several community, housing, and smart growth organizations reached an agreement that would end over six years of debate and litigation over the development of the Princeton Junction Town Center, next to the train station off of Washington Road. The agreement called for 800 homes, including 98 homes affordable to working families with a mix of apartments and condominiums, plus a main street retail district that would create a new downtown and new jobs for West Windsor.

The agreement was approved by the West Windsor Township Council on July 11 in a close 3-2 vote.

In order to be implemented, the agreement requires introduction of two ordinances now scheduled for Monday, August 1 which would modify the redevelopment plan and zoning ordinances to be consistent with the settlement.

Councilwoman Diane Ciccone, who voted for the settlement on July 11, is now wavering over whether to introduce the ordinances or instead send the whole development back to the drawing board. If the ordinances are not introduced as agreed to in the settlement without further changes on August 1, the agreement will become nullified.

If the agreement falls through, the Township would resume what would likely be additional years of litigation, creating large costs for taxpayers. Such litigation would delay new homes and economic development for years, while the settlement offers the prospect of new homes and jobs, and a new downtown for West Windsor, are very much needed.
